Solar photovoltaics

Photovoltaic modules are used to generate clean electricity from sunlight at residential, commercial or utility scale. It can be used in all regions and does not require direct insulation.

In photovoltaic modules, an absorber is used to convert light from the sun into electricity. The most well known absorber is made of (mono- or poly-)crystalline cells.

Thin film technologies are also used to coat a thin layer of absorber (Si, CdTe or CIGS) with the same purpose.

In all cases, glass plays important roles:

  • Allowing the sun’s rays to reach the absorber;
  • Protecting the absorber from external factors, thereby ensuring long life of the module.

For thin film, glass coated with conductive layers is also used for the front (Si and CdTe) or back (CIGS) electrode.
